NSA Open Day 2024

Open Day at the National School of the Arts

On Saturday, 24 February 2024the National School of the Arts (NSA) will proudly open its doors to prospective learners and parents from 08:30 – 13:30.

Classified by the Gauteng Department of Education as a School of Specialisation in Performing and Creative Arts, the NSA has a history of artistic and academic excellence spanning 55 years.

“Open Day offers an authentic window to the world of NSA”, said Mrs Salome Gaelesiwe, Principal of the NSA. “We have prepared a full programme of rehearsals and exhibitions. Our current learners will take the visitors on a school tour, focusing on the four specialist art departments. Our educators, school management and members of the SGB will be available to answer questions about all aspects of the school, from curriculum to auditions to the online application process and school fees,” concluded Gaelesiwe.

The RCL leaders and current learners will host the Open Day visitors, taking them on school and hostel tours while sharing their insight on what it is like to be a learner at South Africa’s Leading Art School.

There will be plenty to see on the day. Visitors will see the dance learners in a warm-up for “Dance Celebration – Project 24”, – the Grade 11 and 12 Choreographic showcase, which is in performance from the 23 – 24 February in The Lesedi at Joburg Theatre. The NSA drama dept will showcase the matric learners working on their physical theatre showcase, while the Grade 10s will be rehearsing for their upcoming OSCAR Night at the school. The choir, the NSA band, and selected soloists will be in rehearsal for their upcoming performances at the Joburg Theatre from the 8 – 10  March. The art department has curated an exhibition of their leading work, and guests will also see the impressive installation “Conversations with a Dead Piano” in the foyer of the school. There will also be final rehearsals for the Schools of Specialisation Festival.

At the NSA, academics and the arts share the spotlight. Visitors will see why the NSA remains one of the top-performing academic schools in the district, boasting 101 distinctions, 71.5% bachelor’s passes, and a 96% pass rate from the Class of 2023.

Admission to the school is granted following a successful audition in either Art, Dance, Drama or Music. The NSA matriculants step well prepared into tertiary institutions where they continue to make their mark in fields as diverse as actuarial science, astrophysics, medicine, engineering, architecture and the arts!

NSA lays creative foundations that stimulate curiosity and inspire excellence, enabling its learners to go out and shape the world in whatever their chosen field. At the forefront of specialised education, the National School of the Arts expands the academic and artistic horizons of creatively gifted learners by providing the teaching and learning environment that will advance them both professionally and academically.
