School of Specialisation in Performing and Creative Arts

The National School of the Arts, fondly known as the NSA, is a unique secondary school serving the advancement of creatively gifted learners from across South Africa providing an environment where they can excel artistically and academically.

Situated on the crest of the Braamfontein Ridge in a precinct known for education, arts, and culture, the NSA has been a pioneer in the field of specialist education for over fifty years. A short walk from the main transport hubs and WITS University, the school attracts day scholars from the greater Johannesburg region and boarders from across the county and greater SADC region. An on-site hostel offers comfortable single-room accommodation in separate buildings for boys and girls. 

Talent and a good academic report are the criteria for admission to the NSA.  Prospective learners must pass an audition in either Art, Dance, Drama, or Music to secure a place at this culturally and historically rich high school where arts and academics share the spotlight.

Upcoming Events

Inaugural Choral Festival

24 & 25 June 2022 @ The NSA

The 1st Annual National School of the Arts Choral Festival is a 2-day event that will welcome choirs from primary schools and high schools from across the country. On day one, the focus will be on learning with singing masterclasses, choral, composition and arranging workshops. Day two will celebrate performance with two public concerts culminating in a mass choir piece. It is time to raise our voices!

Dance Spectrum

18th – 21st August 2022 – The Lesedi at Joburg Theatre

With guest choreographers Vincent Mantsoe and Timothy Le Roux, the NSA Dance Department will be showcased in a “spectrum” of dance which includes Spanish, Neo-Classical Ballet, and contemporary dance. Produced by HOD Haydee Baker with NSA teachers Laura Cameron (contemporary), Heather Dreyer (neo-classical) and Gillian Bonegio (Spanish) choreographing.

Physica

19th – 21st August 2022 (TBC) – The Lesedi at Joburg Theatre

Physica at The Lesedi, Joburg Theatre on 19 – 21 August (dates to be confirmed) features the grade 11 & 12 drama learners in a choreographic and physical theatre showcase.
