Applications to Audition for NSA 2025

The window to apply to audition for the National School of the Arts 2025 intake is now officially open. Prospective learners should start applying and preparing!

The NSA is a School of Specialisation in Performing and Creative Arts where creatively gifted learners from Grades 8 to 12 can excel artistically and academically. Admission to the school depends on a successful audition in either art, dance, drama, or music.

“We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting our first round of auditions for our 2025 intake on the 4th and 11th of May 2024. The application and audition process can be very stressful for parents and learners, and we are here to support our parents and encourage the learners. It is our strategy to start the audition process ahead of the opening of the GDE online applications so that both parents and school have a clear indication of those who have succeeded in their audition and those who have not,” said NSA principal Mrs Salome Gaelesiwe.

Details on the admissions process are available on the school website, artschool.co.za/admissions. Once the online application is complete, the admissions office will contact applicants with an audition time. “Audition day at the NSA is always an exciting day. There is an air of anticipation that is difficult to equal. Every learner at the NSA has been through an audition, it is how the remarkable NSA journey starts. It is like a badge of honour to receive a resounding “yes” from the auditioning panel!” continued Gaelesiwe.

Audition material is available on the website under the individual art subjects. There is an option to upload a video audition submission, although all final auditions will be in person. The school urges all interested candidates to apply early, “We want to avoid the last-minute rush, which also impacts the preparation time needed for a successful audition”, confirms  Ms Johannah Bila from the admissions office, “our goal for 2025 is to be home to 600 learners from Grade 8 to 12. We will look at 120 learners for each grade which means that there are 120 places open for our new intake of Grade 8 learners. Limited spaces are also available for admission to Grades 9-11,” she added.

Once the GDE online registration opens for 2025 Grade 8 admission – all prospective grade 8 learners MUST register online. Learners who pass the NSA audition and receive an offer for a place in 2025 will only be officially enrolled on receipt of the GDE reference number confirming their registration on the GDE admissions website. The GDE online registration is non-negotiable.

2024 Annual School fees are currently: R34 340.00.

The NSA also has a hostel for out-of-town learners.2024 Hostel fees are R59 360.00 for termly boarders and R44 520.00 for weekly boarders. The fees increase by 6% to 8% annually.

Based on the 2023 Matric Results, the NSA is one of the top performing schools in the Johannesburg South District with 101 distinctions, 71.5% Bachelor Passes, and a 96% Pass Rate.

“Our learners pursue their creative passion every day, and that, coupled with the discipline and dedication needed to excel in the arts, translates into their academic work,” concluded Gaelesiwe.

Classified as a School of Specialisation in Performing and Creative Arts, the National School of the Arts is a public Gauteng Department of Education School and is situated in Braamfontein Johannesburg in a precinct well known for arts and education.
